Ambassador Loro Da Silva Horta stated that as an ASEAN member state, Timor-Leste stands to attract increased domestic and foreign investment. On one hand, other ASEAN member states may increase direct investment in Timor-Leste, fostering the development of its infrastructure, manufacturing, and service industries. On the other hand, Timor-Leste can also better attract investment from China and Hong Kong, China, thereby enhancing its economic competitiveness.
更重要的是, 加入东盟, 东帝汶就不再孤单, 其能有效提升国际地位, 并能够以东盟成员国的身份参与区域和国际事务的讨论与决策, 增强其在国际社会中的话语权和议价能力, 与其他国家建立更广泛的外交关系和合作伙伴关系。
More importantly, by joining the ASEAN, Timor-Leste will no longer be isolated. It will effectively enhance its international standing and participate in discussions and decision-making on regional and international affairs as an ASEAN member state. This will strengthen its voice and bargaining power within the international community, enabling it to establish broader diplomatic relations and partnerships with other nations.

During our conversation, we learned that in recent years, Australia's influence over Timor-Leste has gradually deepened. From energy cooperation to the construction of submarine oil and gas pipelines, its powerful penetration is evident in every aspect. In particular, through these collaborations, Australia has gradually brought Timor-Leste into its sphere of influence. Oil and gas constitute Timor-Leste's primary revenue sources and 90% of the national GDP. To ensure more effective, rational, and transparent utilization of revenues generated from these resources and achieve sustainable national economic development, the Timorese government established an oil fund in August 2005, modeled after Norway's system. Current promising investment sectors include: infrastructure, agricultural cooperation, marine fisheries, energy and minerals, tourism and hospitality, commerce and trade, and transportation.
