牙买加驻华大使托马斯先生2013年7月21日到中国履新，受国际货币基金组织培训，此前在牙买加银行工作四年。前不久，本刊记者有幸采访了这位具有传奇色彩的牙买加外交官，他说，很高兴接受你们的访问， 我很自豪，大使工作让我都有机会亲眼目睹中国发展的巨大成果。
Mr. Ralph Thomas came to China and became the Jamaican Ambassador to China on July 21st 2013. Before coming to China, he worked in the IMF and the Bank of Jamaica. Recently, we had an exclusive interview with this legendary Jamaican diplomat. He said, I am very proud that I have the opportunity to work as the Ambassador to China and witness the great achievements of China's development.

Journalist: “Hello Mr. Ambassador, since China and Jamaica established the diplomatic relations in 1972, Jamaica has been one of the most important trading partners in the Caribbean region. As the Ambassador to China, would you please share your impressions about China with us? Do you enjoy working in China?”

托马斯谈到，自2013年7月到中国以来，在经济、社会、文化、政治以及公共外交等领域深化我们中牙两国关系，我都有幸有机会参与其中。我喜欢在中国工作。我也有到中国的其它地方旅行，大使工作让我都有机会亲眼目睹中国发展的巨大成果，包括通过城镇化项目、产业创新来提供就业机会和增加国民收入来改善人民生活的新举措，以及创建可持续发展和生态文明的努力我都看到、听到、感受到，我非常喜欢这个充满活力的国家。
Ambassador Thomas said, since arriving in China in July 2013, I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to engage with China in the areas of economic, social, cultural, political and public diplomacy to deepen the relationship between our two countries, China and Jamaica. I have enjoyed working in China. I have also travelled to other parts of China and had the opportunity to see firsthand the results of China’s development and new initiatives to foster improvements in the lives of its people through urbanization programs, industry creation to provide employment and national income, and efforts to create sustainable development and ecological civilization.
“大使先生您曾在纽约银行的重要部门担任副手22年，受国际货币基金组织培训，在银行、商贸、金融领域里高层经验丰富，在您大使任职内如何推动中国和牙买加在设施建设、投融资、文化、旅游等领域合作，实现共同发展？”记者问。
“You have worked as a senior officer in the banking industry in New York for more than 22 years and professionally trained by the IMF. You have such high-level experience in banking, commercial trading, finance and related fields. As the Ambassador to China, how will you promote China and Jamaica’s bilateral cooperation in infrastructure, investment, culture, tourism and other popular sectors?” we asked.
“作为大使，我有机会与中国政府各部委和机构、国企、上市公司和私人企业的决策者们互动，在人文交流、文化和贸易、基础设施建造及投资领域的双赢方面，我们建立了更深层次的了解。因为世界每一天都在飞速变化，了解全球经济的基本准则，并且能够创造性地对我们的商业模式和关系进行必要的调整以应对这些现实，是非常重要的。我会更加努力倾听新思想，并与中国人民分享基于我本人经历的看法，促进和谐共存、共同发展，为未来合作打下坚实的基础。旅游业在牙买加是个重要产业，为增进民间往来、分享大自然美景带来的喜悦、牙买加的多样性、人民及其文化。我相信，牙买加，拥有尤塞因·博尔特、雷鬼乐和蓝山咖啡的这片土地，是人类文明的独特部分，供所有人享有。我们已经取消对中国公民的旅游签证要求，所有现在去牙买加旅行更容易、更方便。”大使介绍说。
“As the Ambassador, I have the opportunity to interact with decision-makers in various Ministries and Agencies of Government, State Owned Enterprises, Public and Private Companies and establish deeper understandings regarding people to people exchanges, culture and win-win opportunities that exist in the areas of trade, infrastructure creation and investments. Because the world is a rapidly changing place it is important to understand the fundamental economic principles that underlay our economy and the global economy and be able to creatively make the necessary adjustments to our business models and relationships to respond to these realities. I will work harder to listen to new ideas and to share my insights based upon my experiences with the Chinese people and foster harmonious coexistence and shared development as a basis for future cooperation. Tourism is an important industry in Jamaica and provides an opportunity for enhanced people to people exchanges and shared enjoyment of the great natural beauty and diversity of Jamaica, its people and its culture. I believe Jamaica the land of Usain Bolt, Reggae music and Blue Mountain coffee is a unique part of human civilization to be enjoyed by all. We have made it easier to travel to Jamaica by waiving the requirement for Tourism Visas for Chinese nationals.” he answered.

“Jamaica is an island surrounded by some of the world’s most beautiful white sand beaches, hotels and attractions which are enriched by the cities, towns and villages that are in close proximity and which reflect the rich ethnic diversity of its people, the unique personality and style of the Jamaican which is to be hospitable and welcoming of visitors. Our tangible and intangible culture is unique and is enhanced by creativity in song and dance, giving rise to music shared by the entire world, such as the famous reggae music of Bob Marley and other Jamaican artists. The expression of the desire to achieve the best in human development is seen in our athleticism in many sports and domination of sprinting at the international level. Our air and water is fresh and pure, our majestic Blue Mountain that forms a central ridge in our island is like a figure of a sleeping dragon, on the back of which grows the rarest and finest Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, acknowledged as the best in the world. From Jamaica, visitors can travel to other locations in Latin America and the Caribbean through Cruise Shipping to other destinations.
