The so-called “strongest Japanese Universiade men’s soccer team” underwent an upset their first match against average African team Ghana. Japan was in lead with two goals but drew the game 2-2 with Ghana in the end. The afternoon of August 11, in Shenzhen Institute of Occupational Information the Universiade men’s soccer stadium, the junior reporters exclaimed that Japan didn’t win equaled to “losing” while Ghana didn’t win equaled to “winning.” The junior reporters also said that this was a match worth reporting.
Junior reporters had been informed that Japan had always attached importance to Universiade games. The Japanese men’s soccer team had won the Universiade men’s soccer championship four times, more than any other team. On that day, many from Janpanese delegation and Japanese reporters came to watch the battle. According to the Japanese reporter, this team was highly competitive in the Universiade matches and that with the team’s strength and good cooperation, its goal was champion.

In contrast, the Ghana players were almost all amateur college players. After the game started, the Japanese team seized complete control of the game. Their skilled collaboration confounded the Ghanaians. By the first 36 minutes, Japan had scored two goals among which one was a penalty scored by Captain Yamamura Kazuya. It seemed that Japan was approaching victory. Since then the Japanese team became somewhat casual. At the 71th minute, one of the Ghanaian players was sent off, which made the Japanese team even more relaxed. At 88 minutes, Ghana once again unreasonably broke into the Japanese team’s restricted area, and Captain Buka Li scored and tied the match score at 2-2. This goal cheered the Ghanaians up, but neither the process nor the result was acceptable for the Japanese team.
Home and Abroad News junior reporters finished the interview procedures in the press center, and hurriedly ran to the mixed zone for interview to welcome the Ghana men’s soccer team. Ghana’s soccer coach Tanko told the junior reporters that many Ghanaian players were college students and this was there first time to participate in international competitions. But they dared to play and fight; their morale was quite reassuring. Since they just had a great game, the Ghanaian players were very happy to be interviewed by the junior reporters; they happily posed for a group picture.
