On September 26, 2026, the Ethiopian Embassy in China hosted an Ethiopia-China Cultural and Tourism Gala themed “From the Highlands to the Silk Road.” President Wei Yan of Home and Abroad News Press, Executive Director Mr. Liu Dengchen and Deputy Director Ms. Virginia Ma attended this unique cultural event.

Ethiopia’s unique charm, when compared to its neighboring countries, has earned it the title of the “Roof of Africa”. It has a long history and a rich cultural heritage. In Ethiopia, visitors can explore numerous historical sites, such as the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela and the obelisks of Axum. Located in northern Ethiopia and built in the 12th century, the Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches are among the largest rock-hewn churches in Africa. Carved from a single block of rock and featuring exquisite interior decorations, these churches stand as symbols of Christian culture.

At the Ethiopian Cultural Tourism Gala, Dr. Aziza Gaiteta, Chargé d’Affaires and Deputy Head of Mission at the Ethiopian Embassy in China, introduced Ethiopia’s rich and diverse tourism resources to the guests in her speech, including historical sites such as Lalibela and Axum, the magnificent Simien Mountains, and the country’s unique coffee culture.

Presented by Dr. Aziza Gaiteta, the event featured a PowerPoint presentation, song and dance performances, a display of traditional Ethiopian attire, and tastings of Ethiopian cuisine and coffee. In Beijing during this golden autumn, allvguests were captivated by the beauty of Ethiopia and its scenic landscapes, cuisine, people, and fine wines.

At the same time, the Chinese community living and working in Ethiopia is facing new demands for professional growth. She invited Chinese enterprises and investors to explore tourism and investment opportunities in Ethiopia, emphasizing that cultural exchanges, tourism, and media cooperation would help enhance mutual understanding between the two countries and strengthen the bonds of friendship between the Ethiopian and Chinese peoples.

President Wei Yan of Home and Abroad News Press had a brief exchange with Dr. Aziza. Although she has been in China for only four months, she has already had the opportunity to visit many parts of the country with the aim of further deepening bilateral cooperation between Ethiopia and China in the fields of trade, investment, and tourism. She has already visited Hainan, Shanghai, and Urumqi. She has witnessed firsthand the diligence and dedication of the Chinese people and has also felt the warmth and affection people hold for Ethiopia. Currently, Ethiopia and China have established an all-weather strategic partnership. As bilateral relations continue to deepen, people-to-people exchanges and economic ties are becoming increasingly close. This event has provided a valuable platform to promote people-to-people exchanges between Ethiopia and China and to expand cooperation in the fields of culture, tourism, and media.

阿齐扎认为, 现在越来越多埃塞俄比亚学子希望来华学习。与此同时, 也有不少中国学生学习埃塞俄比亚的本土语言。两国青年中有不少已经可以用对方的语言表达想法, 助力巩固两国关系。这些埃塞留学生可以被称作身处中国的 “小小大使”, 他们熟悉两国文化, 接受中文授课学习。这有利于开展人文交流、构建民心相通关系。
Dr. Aziza believes that an increasing number of Ethiopian students now wish to study in China. At the same time, many Chinese students are learning local Ethiopian languages. Many young people from both countries are already able to express their thoughts in each other’s languages, which helps strengthen bilateral relations. These Ethiopian students can be described as “little ambassadors” in China; they are familiar with the cultures of both countries and are taking courses taught in Chinese. This contributes to cultural exchanges and fosters a bond of mutual understanding between the two peoples.
埃塞俄比亚青年以开放的心态欢迎中国游客的到来
