The United Nations, as the biggest, the most important and representative international authority nowadays, gather the effort of its various branches to put up an exhibition in UN Pavilion for 2010 Shanghai EXPO. The UN Pavilion presents the contribution that UN has made in the areas of sustainable development, climate change, city administration, and so forth. Under the invitation of the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, the UN Pavilion Commissioner General, Dr. Awni Behnam, our junior journalist group interviewed the UN Pavilion on July 23. Simple design with the hue of blue and the decoration of the conspicuous UN emblem represents peace, dignity, and mutual respect that people all over the world long for in life.
The climax of this interview occurred in the news conference room of the UN pavilion. There, we junior journalists interviewed the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, the UN Pavilion Commissioner General, Dr. Awni Behnam, who gave us a great lesson on our view of world and of life.
Dr. Behnam, Zhongwai News Chief Editor, Yanwei, and the chief newsman from a UN auxiliary, North North Organization, took charge of the event. Junior journalist Da Song, who has been studying in the US, posed the first general question:” Nice to meet you, Dr. Behanam. We all know that UN is a big international organization with multiple branches, such as the WHO and WTO. Yet can you explain to us junior journalists the major functions of the United Nations in dealing with world issues?”
Dr. Behnam: “First, I want to emphasize that United Nations belongs to you and I; all the junior journalists here today are members of the UN. The different branches of our organization serve to secure people's multiple rights, such us health rights, human rights and children's rights to receive education etc. Still, it is very important for everybody to know that our main job and the ultimate purpose is to bring peace and happiness to the world. The UN doesn’t produce stuff: we don't produce the bike you ride or the things you use daily. But we provide the world with the healthy environment for production by ensuring the communications among different countries to improve their mutual understanding so that they won’t fight against each other. Only in a world of peace and prosperity can people have stable incomes and good health, can the children receive education and embrace future. Everyone in the world owns the right to live in a peaceful and blissing environment; to protect your right, the UN holds discussions, meetings, and establishes protocol and international law to prevent violence, to use resources wisely, and to protect the environment.”
Junior Jounalist, Haowen Zhang asked soon after: “Hello, Dr. Behnam. I am an elementary school student from Haerbin. I want to know in what areas of the world the children can't afford to go to school or to eat. What’s their living condition like?” Dr. Behnam asked him back, “I am very surprised and impressed by your question. How old are you, little boy?” Haowen Zhang, “I am ten.” It’s very precious for Haowen to ask such a question at the age of ten. Dr. Behnam was moved by the Chinese children's concern and love for children in other places of the world. As reflected by Chinese kids, Dr Behnam saw that China as a great nation shoulders its grand responsibility for the world.
Dr Behnam:“It is really nice that you are concerned with the world at such a young age. You are lucky to be a kid in a great nation and to be taken good care of. There are many children in Africa, Asia and Latin America that suffered from hunger, illness, and poverty. The United Nations care about these kids, and we want to help them.”
Junior journalist Mengqian Liu from Yantai, Shandong, asked, “Does the UN provide any help for disabled children?”
Dr. Behnam,“UN has been paying close attention to children born with defect: the World Health Organization and United Nations International Children's Emergence Fund have done many research and make laws and protocol to protect these children. But every one of us should take greater responsibility because we are the United Nations. When your sibling, your relative, your friend or even a stranger in your life runs into such a problem, you should be the first one to give a helping hand rather than waiting for the United Nations agents to solve every single problem. This way we all assume our obligations to the society.”
Junior Journalist from Hong Kong brought up the last question: “What if I want to contact with children in other places of the world, especially those living in poverty, what can I do? My friend and I want to help them.”
Dr. Behnam: “As long as you keep this question in your mind, you shall find ways to contact with poor children in the world. It's actually not that hard. You can make friends at school. You and your friends can then visit the UNICEF office in your area and ask the agents for the information of your school’s sister school in a poor region. The sister school can be in Bangladesh or in Uganda etc. Under the help of UN officer, you can build up connection with children elsewhere. This connection will not only improve your communication ability, but also very likely change your world view and life outlook.”
Although junior journalists spent limited time with Dr. Behnam, but we were deeply moved by the man well respected worldwide. The journalists all indicate that this special interview was more like a lesson that inspired their world view and life outlook.
After the interview, The United Nations North North Organization's Chief Newsman, our magazine's Chief Editor, Yanwei, and Dr. Behnam exchanged gifts. Dr. Behname readily agreed to award the junior journalists the “Certificate of Excellent Junior Journalist.” He warned the junior journalists that they needed to tell the truth. Dr. Behnam couldn't help looking lovingly at every awarded junior journalist because to witness the achievement of young generations seems to present a bright future of the world in front of his eyes…
