Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in the central-western part of the Balkan Peninsula. It is surrounded by several countries, bordering Croatia to the north and west, Serbia to the east, and Montenegro to the southeast. Its unique geographical location makes it a key transportation hub and cultural crossroads in the Balkan Peninsula, drawing on the influence of Central European culture while blending the distinctive charm of Southeast Europe. On the afternoon of August 6th, “Witnessing Friendship” --- 2026 Summer Home and Abroad News Press Junior Journalist Delegation had an exclusive interview with Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to China H.E. Mr. Sinisha Berjan.

Since presenting his credentials on January 30, 2024, as Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to China H.E. Mr. Sinisha Berjan has actively participated in multi-sectoral cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European countries during his tenure, including participating in the 2024 China–Central and Eastern European Countries Exchange Week and hosting a live-streamed promotional event for Bosnian products. delivering remarks at the Third China (International) Development Zone Investment Promotion and Investment Forum in December 2024, and facilitating the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Sister-City Relations between Pizhou City and Brod, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in March 2025. He has repeatedly and publicly commended China’s achievements in science and technology, poverty alleviation, and economic reform, and has emphasized Bosnia and Herzegovina’s deepening of economic and trade cooperation with China through the Belt and Road Initiative.

A junior journalist asked: “Hello, Ambassador! As a seasoned diplomat, it is a great honor for us to interview you today. On January 30, 2024, you presented your credentials to Chinese President Xi in Beijing, officially becoming the Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to China. In your opinions, how can young generations in China and Bosnia and Herzegovina carry forward the precious friendship between our two countries? How can the youth of both nations contribute their wisdom and efforts to the healthy development of China- Bosnia and Herzegovina friendly relations? Thank you!”

Ambassador Sinisha Berjan noted that since taking office, he has been entrusted with the important mission of strengthening the comprehensive friendly and cooperative partnership between Bosnia and Herzegovina and China. On the political front, he is committed to strengthening high-level exchanges and dialogue between the two countries to foster political mutual trust; in the economic sphere, he is also actively promoting growth in bilateral trade and investment to help Bosnia and Herzegovina ride the wave of China’s economic development; and in the cultural realm. He is vigorously promoting cultural exchanges and people-to-people exchanges to deepen mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples, thereby advancing Bosnia and Herzegovina–China relations to new heights across the board.

Ambassador Sinisha Berjan said that Bosnia and Herzegovina actively promotes the development of China-Bosnia and Herzegovina relations and deepens cooperation in culture, education, and the economy. The friendship passed down by the youth of both countries serves as the foundation of their friendly relations. The youth of both nations in this new era should carry on this spirit, break down prejudices and barriers through exchanges, and build a correct understanding of one another. Whether through cultural dialogue or academic exchanges, every interaction between the youth of Bosnia and Herzegovina and China helps build a foundation of public support for the steady and long-term development of bilateral relations, thereby nurturing and strengthening the roots of the tree of friendship between the two nations.

“Hello Ambassador, On March 31, 2025, you successfully visited Jiangsu University and Lanzhou University, where you highly commended the universities’ outstanding achievements in areas such as smart agriculture technology and equipment, and exchanged views on jointly promoting scientific and technological innovation cooperation between China and Bosnia and Herzegovina. We discussed our shared vision for cooperation and deliberated on major development plans. This clearly demonstrates the importance you place on educational cooperation between our two countries. In your view, what further opportunities for educational cooperation between China and Bosnia and Herzegovina? We will jointly contribute our wisdom and efforts to further develop friendship and achieve mutual benefit and win-win outcomes for both nations. Thank you!”

“That’s an excellent question!” said the ambassador. “In recent years, educational cooperation between China and Europe has deepened. As an important member of Central and Eastern Europe, Bosnia and Herzegovina has also achieved significant results in exchanges and cooperation with China in the field of education. Education serves as one of the bridges connecting China and Bosnia and Herzegovina; currently, students and governments from both countries have established numerous cooperative initiatives and exchanges in this area. At the same time, Chinese culture is widely accepted and appreciated by many people in Bosnia and Herzegovina.”

有小记者问：“大使阁下您好！提到一个国家，人们总是习惯于从一个国家所特有的自然地貌，寻找代表该国家的特点，比如一谈到长江、黄河、大熊猫，人们都知道是中国。提到波黑，我们应该想到什么呢？我有一个心愿：希望能和波黑小朋友交朋友，向他们传递中国儿童对他们的友好情意。请问：通过什么渠道可以实现我们的心愿？谢谢！”
“Dear Ambassador, When people think of a country, they often look to its unique natural features to identify what represents it. For example, when people hear “Yellow River” or “Giant Panda” they immediately think of China. When we think of Bosnia and Herzegovina, what should come to our mind? I have a wish: I hope to make friends with Bosnia and Herzegovina children and deliver our friendship with them. I want to know what channels can we make this wish come true? Thank you!” another junior journalist asked.
回答问题前，西尼沙·贝尔扬大使进入他的办公室拿出3张波黑马克，一张1元、一张10元、一张100元展示在小记者面前，他说中国青少年认识波黑也要认识波黑马克，这是波黑的统一货币，大使现场还教我们小记者学习波黑的语言，邀请我们到波黑去做客。希望我们多多了解波黑文化，争取与波黑青少年多多交流，还鼓励小记者不要停止学习。
Before answering our questions, Ambassador Sinisha Berjan went into his office and brought out three Bosnian Mark notes: one 1-mark, one 10-mark, and one 100-mark, to show the junior journalists. He said that Chinese youth, in learning about Bosnia and Herzegovina, should also learn about the Bosnian Mark, which is the country’s unified currency. The ambassador also taught us junior journalists some Bosnian phrases on the spot and invited us to visit Bosnia and Herzegovina. He expressed his hope that we would learn more about Bosnian culture and strive to engage in more exchanges with Bosnian youth, while also encouraging us young reporters to never stop learning.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a multi-ethnic, mountainous country located on the Balkan Peninsula. It is home to both the world-renowned historical legacy of Sarajevo and the symbol of peace that is the Old Bridge in Mostar. Compared to Western European countries, it offers lower prices, beautiful scenery, and a rich history, making it increasingly popular among backpackers and in-depth travelers. With its numerous mountains, crystal-clear rivers, and high forest coverage, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country of exceptional natural beauty. In the old towns of Bosnia and Herzegovina, sitting down for a cup of coffee is the best way to experience local life. “Numerous mountains, crystal-clear rivers, and high forest coverage—that is Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said Ambassador Sinisha Berjan.

During the interview, the junior journalists learned that Bosnia and Herzegovina has hosted the Winter Olympics and participated in two World Cups, the most glorious sporting events in the country’s history. On the stage of the 2026 USA-Canada-Mexico World Cup, a team from a small nation with a population of just 3.18 million, but it is writing its own legend: In the final do-or-die match of Group B, BiH defeated Asian champion Qatar 3–1, marking the first time in the country’s soccer history that it has advanced to the World Cup knockout stage. This moment is one that the eagerly awaiting Bosnian fans have been waiting for a full 34 years. Now, on the stage of the USA-Canada-Mexico World Cup, they have not only returned to the World Cup but have also broken through historical limitations.

The interview took place in a friendly atmosphere at the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in China. Ambassador Sinisha Berjan was very pleased with the junior journalists’ outstanding performance. The junior journalists happily presented Ambassador Sinisha Berjan with gifts they had prepared, and he signed for them as souvenirs. The junior journalists gained a wealth of insights from their visit to the embassy and expressed their desire to ask their parents to take them to Bosnia and Herzegovina so they could experience the country’s magical charm with their own feelings. At the end of the interview, the junior journalists wished Ambassador Sinisha Berjan a pleasant stay in China, along with happiness and good health. During the group photo, everyone cheered together: “China-Bosnia and Herzegovina friendship go on forever!”
